3D scanning: what is the difference

To create a 3D model using this method, a special 3D scanner is used. It differs from 3D printers by the type of its construction. Scanning is possible only if you have a real prototype whose 3D model you plan to create. In this case, it should be located in close proximity to the scanner.

There are two types of scanning: contact and non-contact. The first one is quite simple – during direct contact with an object, the equipment captures its parameters and creates a three-dimensional 3D model. The second method is a bit more complicated. It is divided into two types:

  • active – special waves (X-rays, light, ultrasound) are directed at the object, and then the scanner records their reflection;
  • passive – the device captures the reflection of natural radiation, and no special waves are directed.

All types of scanning demonstrate equally good results. As a rule, there is no particular difference in the quality of the object. When choosing a 3D scanner, pay attention to the conditions in which you plan to work (for example, whether it is possible to get direct access to the object or whether you will have to scan at a distance, whether natural light is available in the room).

3D scanning is often used in cases where it is necessary to create a high-quality copy of any part. This allows you not to make it anew, but simply reproduce it using a special device. Most scanners can be used for objects as small as one centimeter. The maximum size depends on the specific model.

How to make a 3D model based on a real object

This type of 3D modeling is less popular than the others. It is quite often used when it comes to working with real objects, using a 3D scanner. If for some reason this is not possible (for example, there is no such equipment at the moment), then 3D modeling is used.

The specialist performing the work moves the object in such a way as to create a 3D model as accurately as possible. This method is best suited for small objects that move easily. If possible, the object is even disassembled into separate components.
